It’s time to feel the burn.

What is Pilates?

Pilates is a mindful and creative approach to movement that embraces all aspects of the body, guided by key Pilates principles.  Six principles—flow and creativity, alignment, breathing, stability and motility, language, and integration—are the foundation of structuring a class that considers the whole body. A deep understanding of how the body functions, including knowledge of bones, muscles, and planes of motion, is essential in effectively implementing these principles.

Pilates Principles

  • Flow and Creativity

The principles of flow and creativity are central to our approach, encouraging the use of all planes of motion within each class. Flow is characterized by seamless transitions between exercises, creating a smooth and connected experience in the body. Creativity shines through in the sequence of exercises and subtle variations, inviting participants to challenge themselves and explore new movements. This dynamic approach is a reflection of the instructor's unique personality.

  • Alignment

Alignment is key to moving the body with ease to find connection, reducing the risk of strain and stress during all phases of the class—before, during, and after. Maintaining proper technique throughout the class is essential to minimizing the chances of injury and promoting safe, effective movement.

  • Breath

Breathing is essential for controlling exercises, calming the mind, and shifting focus from the workout's intensity to the quality of movement. While breathing should remain natural and unforced, its connection to movement enhances every aspect of the exercise.

  • Language

Effective communication is key in any class, making language an essential principle. Clear and precise language helps participants understand the class structure and exercises. Since people learn in different ways, it’s important to use a variety of explanations, such as analogies, physical demonstrations, or verbal cues. This approach ensures that everyone feels included and enhances the overall learning experience.

  • Stability and Mobility

These concepts are most effectively understood when broken down. Stability focuses on engaging deep muscles that are often underutilized in other forms of exercise. This principle highlights the importance of controlled, stabilized movements that strengthen and tone the body. Motility, on the other hand, adds a dynamic element by introducing movement to these stabilizing exercises, enhancing range of motion.

  • Integration

Integration is the art of combining all the principles to create a well-balanced class. This principle encapsulates the essence of Pilates, drawing on both the foundational principles and personal experiences to find coordination, precision, and fluidity in exercises. Proper integration ensures that the class remains focused and that participants can achieve the intended outcomes.
